Grab your pink crocs and boxers because we finally have the first casting decision for the upcoming live action Dungeon Crawler Carl adaption!
With production set to begin in fall 2026, Sony Pictures has shared the first details of their highly anticipated film adaptation of Matt Diniman's comedy fantasy series. Starting with a twist most hadn’t anticipated: Scarlet Johansson has been cast in the titular role, Dungeon Crawler Carl. Considered a controversial pick, the online reception has been divided. Some cheer for the diversity in such a male oriented community:
“Scarlett will KILL at the role! #GIRLZONTOP !!!”
@crawlerrzuko
“This is THE black widow! Losers need to leave the couch and realize this is a top tier pick”
@prncssdonut
Others are deeply frustrated by what they feel is an unfair casting decision in the face of many male actors suited to the role. Recent reports have placed actors Glen Powell and Jack Quaid as frontrunners for the role prior to the Johansson announcement.
“I'm so tired of the woke casting bruh IT'S LITERALLY CARL???”
@teethgapz
“so many other options…how…whats going on. whats the goal here. whatre we doing. we are getting snubbed and so is Diniman”
@dccinv8dr
While author Matt Dinniman has made no public statement in regards to the casting, executive producer on the film Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy, The Orville) when pressed on the controversy stated: “We will cast who we want. She said she could play a tree. A man isn’t far off.” In his statement MaFarlane references the infamous quote from Johansson during her Ghost in the Shell press tour. Johansson stated “You know, as an actor I should be allowed to play any person, or any tree, or any animal because that is my job and the requirements of my job”.
We will have to wait for the movie to be released to be able to judge Johansson's performance for ourselves! Stay tuned for more updates on the Dungeon Crawler Carl production.
